Celebrating the Dora Love Prize: Premiere of The Fragility of Freedom

On 7 February 2025 we held the public premiere of our short film “The Fragility of Freedom: The Dora Love Prize 2024” at the FirstSite Cinema in Colchester, followed by lively discussions between teachers, students and the wider audience, including the Mayor of Colchester Lesley Scott-Boutell and Colchester City Councillors, about the importance of the Dora Love Prize, what students get out of their participation, and what we can do to raise greater awareness of the Prize. It was a wonderful celebration of the Dora Love Prize, and we were joined remotely by Janet Love, Dora’s daughter, and Sue Sanders, co-founder of SchoolsOUT and LGBT+ History Month who sent video messages. The whole event was live signed by BSL signer Nicola Lowthian, bringing everyone together, hearing and deaf members of the audience alike. If you are interested in screening the film “The Fragility of Freedom” in an educational setting, please get in touch with us.

Dora Love Prize 2025 Launches at Colchester Castle The Dora Love Prize 2025 officially launched with a special event at Colchester Castle, bringing together students, educators, and community leaders to promote awareness of prejudice, racism, and human rights. The annual prize, founded by Professor Rainer Schulze in memory of Holocaust survivor Dora Love, invites secondary schools to create projects exploring historical and contemporary issues of intolerance. This year’s launch featured workshops for 64 students and a powerful talk by Holocaust survivor and sculptor Maurice Blik, who shared his childhood experiences during the Nazi occupation. Colchester Mayor Lesley Scott-Bouttell also attended, emphasizing the importance of remembrance and education. The winning school project will be announced this summer. The anti-discrimination initiative, named after Holocaust survivor Dora Love, encourages students to reflect on the past and create projects that challenge intolerance today. This year’s programme has drawn participation from schools across Suffolk, Essex, Kent, Dorset, and even Canada. Around 100 Suffolk pupils attended the launch event at the University of Suffolk, taking part in workshops, drama sessions, and discussions exploring genocide, human rights, and modern political challenges. Now an independent charity, the Dora Love Prize invites students to develop creative responses to the theme “Time to stand up against a renewed wave of hate and exclusion,” culminating in a summer showcase. Prof Schulze said seeing students’ passion gave him hope, despite rising global tensions.
